Confucius Institute of Pisa, Italy Hosted High-End International Forum Entitled “China and Italy’s Participation in Peacekeeping Operations: Integration between Harmonious Culture of Confucianism and Machiavelli Thought”
The High-end International Forum entitled “China and Italy’s Participation in Peacekeeping Operations: Integration between Harmonious Culture of Confucianism and Machiavelli Thought”, jointly organized by Confucius Institute of Pisa and Universite Sainte-Anne, was staged at University Sainte-Anne, Italy from June 7 to June 8, 2012.
The Forum was presided over by Prof. Andrea de Guttry, Chief peacekeeping scientist of the United Nations and Professor at Universite Sainte-Anne. Senior Captain Ye Feng, a military officer of air-sea-land force of Chinese Embassy in Italy, Mrs. Maria Chiara Carrozza, President of Universite Sainte-Anne and Mrs. Li Jing, Chinese Director of Confucius Institute of Pisa, delivered speeches at the Forum. Gianluigi Magri, Vice Minister of Italian Ministry of Defence made an opening and keynote remark, generalizing outstanding contributions made by Italy and China to UN’s and regional peacekeeping operations and looking into the vision of peacekeeping. Staffan De Mistura, Vice Minister of Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made conclusive remarks. While touching upon his experience in serving as the UN special envoy to Afghanistan and chief representative of UN assistance mission in Afghanistan, he spoke highly of the positive attitude towards and meaningful participation of Italy and China in peacekeeping operations and shared his insights into cooperation prospects down the road.
Keynote speech delivered include Mr. Pierluigi Monteduro, general of land force, Mr. Fabio Caffio, general of navy, Mr. Umberto Rocca, general of military police, and experts and professors from Universite Sainte-Anne, University of Pisa, University of Rome, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italian Ministry of Defence, Center for Research on Foreign Affairs, the European Union, Division of Peacekeeping Force of Bureau of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Public Security, China, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China University of Political Science and Law, and Beijing Petition Office. About 100 people from the International Department of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, famous Chinese and Italian academic institutions, departments of relevant affairs, students and scholars majored in international law attended the Forum.
The Forum is divided into four sessions, namely, “Harmonious Culture of Confucianism and Peacekeeping”, “China and Italy: Driving Force for Participating in Peacekeeping Operations”, “Italian Peacekeeping Mission”, “Chinese Peacekeeping Mission”, and “Tendency and Challenge of Peacekeeping and Peace-building”, offering an enabling platform for scholars and experts of the two countries to engage in communication and discussion. Attendees voiced their opinions on relevant issues, talked about the significance of world peacekeeping mission, experience and future work, which will surely have a far-reaching impact on theoretical studies and peacekeeping operations.
The International Forum attracted wide-spread attention from all segments of the society for its high standard, wide participation and in-depth agenda. As such, it was covered and reported by many media outlets, including Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI).
